10 March 2020. Workshop – Show not tell – Hilary Stevenson.

Hilary opened this workshop by distributing photos taken from a world-wide travel calendar.
The first step of the exercise was writing words to describe individual items on the pictures without naming the location.
E.g.  Tall - pointed - steel – scaffolding – town – lights – dark sky.
might describe a photo of the Eiffel Tower at night time.

The next exercise was:-
“Frank is 76. He has moderate and developing dementia.
He lives at home with his wife”.
                                 Describe his living room.

The trick was to write one or more paragraphs which provide solid clues to Frank’s condition without explicitly spelling out his age or ailment.

We all read out and commented on the resulting efforts.

We all know about ‘show not tell’. Putting it into practice is not as easy as knowing.

Sense of Place – the theme originally intended for 3 March.

Kate’s subject was the unique Glasgow Central Station with its ornate architecture, built-in hotel, remote platform 11a, piano, deformed pidgins and the Hielanman's umbrella.  It even merits organised guided tours.

Rab found his sense of place in his recently adopted addiction to suburban gardening. With lawns, flower beds and shrubs, he has tasks for all the seasons.

Hilary had searched for a space away from virus infected travel, shopping and mass entertainment. She eventually found it in the bath with a good book and a G&T.

Pete gave us a piece of ‘faction’ about a Yorkshire farmer, a car with broken fuel gauge, box of matches and a fire resistant flat cap.
