Adjudication and readings from Flash Fiction Competition.

Erskine Writers wish to thank Ayr Writers for their efforts in adjudicating these entries.

Pete’s “A Walk in the Park.” took first position. George’s idyllic stroll in the fresh air and sunshine suddenly turned sinister as he saw his opportunity to snatch the young child.

Jacklin had second place with “Into the Dark.” (Jacklin wasn’t present to read it.)

Kate’s third place was “Tidying the Garden.” Just because she has broken her leg and house-bound, is that any reason for her husband to take a sudden interest in gardening?  What are he and his dodgy cronies up to?

Sandra wrote “Waiting for Greta”. Greta knows she has not left the oven on and yet there is a hot casserole cooking away merrily. Surely it’s too far fetched to believe that recently escaped prisoner could be the intruder.

Wilma was “In High Spirits” when she wrote of the novice priest taking mass for the first time. He settled his nerves with sips of ‘water’. His outrageous but entertaining mistakes and lewd thoughts suggested that the holy spirit had tampered with the clear liquid.

Hilary’s “Superspreaders Welcome” was a contemporary tale of a family of germs which looked for every opportunity to impose itself on the rest of the world. The family joined humans during travel, while in isolation, in hospitals, almost anywhere. It wasn’t fussy.

Joyce  was tempted by “Forbidden Fruit”. An underage girl dressed up in Mum’s shoes and accessories. She’s off to visit a distant supermarket for a haul of cider.

             Addicted for life

Rob   It had been happening for years. It didn’t matter if there were visitors or even if she was away on holiday, she needed her fix every evening. That’s why she joined Archers Anonymous.

Joan F   The family had them at home being ill, on boats trips causing mayhem without a care for anyone else. Incurably addicted to Siamese cats.

Pete   In the days of food rationing, there was still an opportunity to overdose on junk food. Dripping toast, Chicory Essence and Sugar Butties were rarely in short supply..

Elizabeth   Junior bookworms will sometimes read under the bed covers with a torch to get their fill of  Blyton’s Mallory Towers or Helen Wells’ Student Nurses. Give them a cornflakes packet and they’ll even read it cover to cover.

John H.  His world has been spinning ever since he was a teenager. Forget audio tapes, DVDs and downloads. Nothing but a 33s or 78s are good enough for this Vinyl junkie.

Kate   Two of her poems showed this wordsmith’s addiction to the outpouring of Glaswegian dialect.
Folks north of Chrianlarich or south of Lesmahagow would have been scunnered.

Laura was looked for some critique. Her draft story was of a teenager girl’s apprehension of leaving the comforts of home to go to university. Equally, her Mum was wondering how to cope with an empty nest.

Next week .  Adjudication Ayr Writers Flash Fiction entries.
Hilary, Sandra and Joyce will be the final adjudicators.
