On 20th February, Wilma distributed the Lyrics of
various songs.
Today we all brought approx 1200 word stories inspired by
the words of those songs:-
“If I had a talking
picture of you” (1929 – Gracie Fields, Bing Crosby).
This inspired two stories. One told of the finally
successful life long search by a man for his sister; resulting from a childhood
separation caused by a neglectful mother.
The other was of a young woman with learning difficulties, divorced
and with a grown up child. She was smitten by the screen promises of
everlasting love from two media stars who she had never met.
She had the unshakeable illusion of needing to choose which
one she would now marry.
----
“If a
black man is racist, is it okay?” (2005 – Katie Melua”)
This brought back memories of a family of
seven, including four fostered children of mixed colours and ethnic backgrounds,
who instinctively absorbed integration.
---
“There's a pawnshop on
a corner in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania (1952 - Guy Mitchell).
A small boy who gave his sister everything he asked for
until they started to go to separate schools.
---
“Come away with me in
the night” (2002 – Norah Jones).
A story of a husband with the complications of dementia, but
with clear memories of earlier parts of his life.
An adult story of a work colleague taking her revenge by
contriving to hi-jack a couple’s birthday treat and seducing the husband.
---
“Easter parade” (1948
– Judy Garland).
A spoiled, pampered individual, who feels that he/she has
hitherto been the virtual centre of the universe, gets a rude awakening.
---
“They’ve got an awful
lot of coffee in Brazil”
(1946 – Frank Sinatra).
This inspired a tragic coffee poisoning fairy story which
contrived to include the lyrics from a dozen different songs
and
Memories of a coffee and brandy devouring mad hen-holiday in
Florida.
---
There was discussion of the story length of 1200 as
opposed to our more normal 500 word count, which had produced stories of greater depth.

Ian, a newcomer, gave us two of his early poems.
