Erskine Writers Meeting 11th October 2022

 This week we had the pleasure of welcoming Douglas Skelton, author and crime writer who specialises in fiction and non fiction Douglas delivered a workshop on writing a historical article. Douglas provided  us with a bit of his own background. He has published 12 non fiction books and eight crime thrillers, his latest novel is 'An Honourable Thief'.

Douglas advised that research as much as you can on the subject but don't shoehorn every bit of information into your book or article. You want to bring the piece to life, place your reader right into the middle of your story. You cannot change facts but you can build on them. Find the thread/spine to your article. Ask yourself 'what is my argument?' Don't go off on a tangent.

Start in the middle then go back to the beginning.Opening introduction always so important to capture the reader. Stick to the spine of your story don't deviate. Always double check your sources.

Douglas set us two options for the competition;

'Identify a period in history that reflects on modern day society'. the second option 'Identify a period in history that changed the world'

Article should be between 1200 - 1500 words.
