Morag delivered a workshop based on character creation, a workshop given by Theresa Talbot at a previous SAW Conference. The group broke into pairs to discuss characters they have read in novels or in their own writings. This proved to be helpful on how we build our character and get to know them.
The next exercise was was based on 8 ways to give your character;
1. a fear/tension
2. a flaw
3. a backstory
4. interests
5. a quirk
6. a love
7. make them fail
8. make them suffer.
This again proved to very helpful to the group.
The workshop concluded with the 5 following points;
1. What tangible goal does the character want to achieve?
2. What emotion motivates the character?
3. Why does the character think achieving this goal will satisfy this emotion?
4. What belief underlies their emotional motivation?
5. What experience/event underlies this belief?
